Course Description

Welcome to Mission Prakriti—a student-led movement to green our schools and communities and build a sustainable world.

This course is designed to prepare you to launch your own Mission Prakriti in your school and communities. Through the four course modules, you’ll get to understand the principles behind Mission Prakriti and how to explore our country’s biodiversity and connect with nature around us, use a whole-school approach to building a green school, and expand what you’ve learnt to apply it and green your community.

Why Mission Prakriti?

We, and other living things, depend on Planet Earth for every aspect of our existence. Sadly, human actions have led to polluted land, water, and air; the loss of the habitats of many living things; and plummeting populations of different species.

But all is not lost! Because we can bring change. Each of us can affect change, and working with others can turn our collective small efforts into big changes that make a difference to our environment.

Mission Prakriti prepares school students to work towards building green schools and transforming their communities into green communities.

Schools, where young minds are shaped, play a critical role in shaping our future. Schools are also where children find a little community—of friends, peers, and supportive adults—with whom they can learn about our impact on the environment, build support for change, and launch a movement to build a green school. These children are then equipped to expand their efforts to their local communities to transform them into green communities. The Mission Prakriti journey, therefore, includes three steps—connecting with nature, building a green school, and building a green community.

Your achievements during this mission will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of aims and targets adopted by member states of the United Nations in 2015. The SDGs aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

A FRAMEWORK THAT PUTS ‘YOU’ AT THE HEART OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Mission Prakriti’s path to a more sustainable world begins with individual action and expands to the school, and, eventually, the community at large. Your mission will progress in three stages.

Knowing Our Country

India is home to around 7–8% of the world’s species. This mega-diverse country of ours has many endemic species that are found nowhere else in the world. Do you know which these are? We are more likely to protect what we know and care about. That’s why your first step on the Mission Prakriti journey is to learn more about your country’s rich biodiversity. Understanding your local biodiversity and the threats that these plants and animals face can help you recognize the impacts of your actions and analyse how we can do things differently.

Our Green School

With Mission Prakriti, you can transform your school into an environment-friendly place. The movement helps by inculcating green values, which guide our behaviour and choices so that we may live more sustainably. The Mission uses a 360-degree approach to building a green school and engages students, teachers, staff members, parents, and local communities.

Our Green Communities

The third stage in the Mission Prakriti journey requires expanding learnings to apply them to the community. Mission Prakriti encourages you to be an eco-ambassador not just in your school, but also in your family, neighbourhood, and the larger community. When all the members of a community understand the benefits of creating green spaces, they can take steps towards building one and transforming the community into a green community.
