Sing, Fly, Soar –Like a Bird!

The migratory birds stitch our world together and remind us of what we have in common. They are among the most powerful symbols of biodiversity and ecosystems to be protected across nations.

This World Migratory Bird Day, we are not only celebrating birds but also taking a moment to reflect on our overall relationship with nature and strengthen our efforts to protect birds. The theme for this year’s World Migratory Bird Day is Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird. Fly into the latest edition of Nature Nuggets and explore the hidden spectacles of nature.

The World Migratory Bird Day was initiated in 2006 and since then it is celebrated globally every year on May 8th.

It’s important to understand that the migratory species connect our world. They move across the globe, swimming, running, flying, connecting countries, people and continents through their migration routes. Their migration can only be accomplished when they can access different sites and habitats that they rely upon along their routes.

This WMBD, let’s take care of nature as it is taking care of us – allowing us to thrive on Earth. It’s time we take small steps and reconnect with nature. Step into your balcony, backyard or peek out of your window. You are sure to discover a new spectacle of nature.

Common Name: Great White Pelican
Scientific Name: Pelecanus onocrotalus

The Great White Pelican is a large white water bird identified with a hefty bill and a yellow-orange throat pouch.

It is commonly also called as Rosy Pelican because of the pink bare skin around eye that extends towards the bill. Their legs are pink too. When they fly, dark flight feathers are visible which contrast with the rest of the wings. These beautiful birds are often seen fishing cooperatively, swimming in a wide arc to round up the fish and then scoop them into their pouch.

They are mostly seen in pairs or flocks and breed in Middle East and Eastern Europe. They migrate to India in large numbers during winters and settle down mainly in states like Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
