Life in the Oceans !

Ever wondered, what color does the Earth look like from outer space? Of course, Blue! Almost 70% of our planet is covered with water with “coastal seas” being the largest habitat on Earth.

Did you know, the ocean produces more than half of the oxygen that sustains life on the planet. Its ability to absorb carbon dioxide helps protect all life from the harsh impacts of climate change. How we treat the water on earth affects every species on the planet, now and for years to come. Let’s take a virtual dive into the ocean and experience the beauty of the underwater world!

World Ocean Day is celebrated on June 8th. In this month, one of the most important things we can do is learn new ways to protect our blue planet.

The “Blue carbon” ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass meadows and kelp forests can sequester as much/more carbon per hectare than terrestrial ecosystems! Yes, and coral reefs, act as blue infrastructure, offering protection against storms and other impacts of climate disruption.

This World Ocean Day, WWF released a new Blueprint for a Living Planet. It outlines four principles for integrated ocean-climate action that is believed should guide discussions going into the crucial UN climate conference, COP26 in November, 2021. Watch this to know more.

Dolphin

Common Name: Bottlenose Dolphin
Scientific Name: Tursiops

These clever, streamlined mammals are found in most of the world’s oceans. Bottlenose dolphins are generally social creatures that live in groups called ‘pods’, which can contain hundreds of individuals.

Dolphins play an important role in keeping their environment in balance! They eat animals like fish and squid and are themselves a source of food for some sharks and other creatures. Without dolphins, the animals they prey on would increase in number, and their predators wouldn’t have as much to eat. Hence, to avoid the disruption in the natural balance in the food chain and negative effects on other wildlife and the health of the ocean environment, it is important to conserve dolphins.
